Dibaba
smashes WR, Flanagan sets AR, 4 other National Records fall
in night of fast action
BOSTON (Jan. 27, 2007) – Two years ago at
the Reebok Boston Indoor Games, Tirunesh Dibaba
of Ethiopia broke the World Record for 5000 meters.
Tonight, the 21-year-old superstar did it again,
shattering her mark of 14:32.93 with an eye-popping
run of 14:27.42. Even she was impressed.
“I was concentrating on this race, so I had
the confidence to break it (the record),” she
said afterward, adding: “I didn't think I could
break it by this much.”
Dibaba’s daring run was not the only record
set at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center
tonight. The sell-out crowd was also thrilled with
an American Record at 3000 meters by local favorite
Shalane Flanagan, who grew up in nearby Marblehead,
Mass., as well as three National Records for Australia
and another for New Zealand. Four meet records
were also set.
